You might be surprised to know that RSS fields several competitive sports teams open to all Middle School students. 70-100 students participate each season in a variety of sports. The three season format encourages kids to try new sports and to stay active through the year. Teams compete against other NYC independent schools and practice after school twice per week.
All coaches have CPR and first aid training, and professional trainers are brought in when games are hosted by RSS. Coaches work to improve individual skill level, good sportsmanship, increased competitiveness and strong game tactics.
Depending on the sport (and the weather) teams are bused to Chelsea Piers, Icahn Stadium on Randall’s Island, Riverbank State Park and other local facilities for practice and games. In addition, the gym at 79th Street is used extensively, as are Riverside and Central Parks (great for the track team training!). There is no charge to participate and team uniforms are provided.
All students who join the team and get to play in games – regardless of ability. Coaches are comprised of school staff who know the kids already and are experts in the sports they coach. Kids are given instruction and practice time and gain a better understanding of the sport and team dynamics. Coaches try to make it fun and promote sports as a path to good health and social connections.
Here are the sports offered this spring:
5th/6th Girls Softball
5th/6th Boys Baseball
5th/6th Track and Field
7th/8th Track and Field
7th/8th Grade Tennis
Fall and winter offerings include Cross-country, Volleyball, Basketball, Soccer -and- the newest addition – Ultimate Frisbee. 5th and 6th Grade sports are always on Monday/Wednesday, while 7th and 8th Grade teams usually practice on Tuesday/Thursday.
Come support the RSS Lions as they compete! Games happen all around the city, and times/places are posted on the Athletics page on the school website. Go Lions!
